During World War II a military aged German farmer, not necessarily opposed to serving in the German army but skeptical of Hitler, refuses to swear the compulsory loyalty oath upon his conscription.
What ensues is entirely predictable.
The movie is nearly 3 hours long and the most interesting parts of the film are front-loaded in the first hour. The pacing of the film is already slow, then gets slower.
Although the film has some historical interest, it is simply not fun to watch because the story drags and the protagonist is entirely passive during the entirety of the film.
The audience is left to guess his motivations because he hardly says anything. It is hinted that the protagonist might feel his passive resistance is part of a quasi-religious duty to fight evil.
Multiple groups left the theater during my screening. The same story could have been told in half the time.
If there is one key message I took away from the film, it is one man's passive resistance is another man's passive aggression.
Profound. not really.
The reaction of the moviegoer seated next to me sums up the general audience experience, I am sure we watched it for some reason."
Educational value 7/10. Entertainment value 4/10.

However it never aspires to be anything else preventing it from becoming a classic amongst the genre.
I haven't been familiar with the true story but from the start, you just know where it is all gonna go. It still works well but nothing is a surprise because of that. It still has some great moments and a fair amount of heart
It is seriously enjoyable and it is a likeable movie with a great cast. Kristen Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan are great here.
I'm sure there are many people who will like this film. I just can't see that much greatness in it. It's formulaic and does it's best to be a lovely and charming film but it does it in such a manipulative way, and I hate it when films do that. It is still worth watching though.

Military Wives was just absolutely brilliant. From the moment it started to the rolling credits, I did not move, I was 100% enthralled with the characters and the relationships they had. I cried many many times throughout, found bits heartbreaking, but still I came away feeling lighter with a warm glow inside.
I laughed, I cried and I cried some more. The last film I saw that was that moving, was Kramer vs Kramer. I loved it.

| Glenn Kenny May 5, 2017 “Urban Light, ” an art installation on the grounds of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, by the Wilshire Boulevard entrance, is, I think it’s safe to say, one of the most popular pieces of public art in the United States. The elegantly arranged sculptural array of over 200 old-style street lamps, which via solar power snap on at dusk and go out after dawn, has been featured in more than several feature films, on the covers of Los Angeles tourism brochures, in television commercials for California, and so on. Not bad for a work that is not yet even ten years old. It is, among other things, a remarkably friendly and accessible piece of public art; unlike Richard Serra’s controversial 1981 “Tilted Arc, ” a curved raised scar across the plaza of New York’s Federal Plaza; a challenge in the form of an artwork that was answered by its 1985 removal from the space. The irony of “Urban Light” and its magical reputation is that it is the work of an artist who had at one time been one of the most controversial, and vitriol-inspiring, of the late 20 th century: Chris Burden, the subject of this consistently fascinating documentary. Advertisement The movie begins with one of Burden’s most memorable statements. A television commercial he made in the early ‘70s, and paid to place on various stations, reeling off a list of great artists’ names: Leonardo, Michelangelo, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Picasso, and ending with his own name. “I was gonna use Warhol too but he was still alive and I didn’t want to give him a free commercial, ” Burden says to an interviewer from that era, a dark haired loudly-dressed man who it took me a little while to recognize as Regis Philbin, who did indeed have an L. A. chat show on television in the ‘70s. Then there’s newer footage of Burden leading the film crew around the grounds of his seemingly airplane-hangar sized studio near Topanga Canyon. He speaks of his habit of hiking around the grounds; it takes a whole two hours to circle it, he says. In his mid-sixties at the time of shooting, he seems both calm and robust. Through narration, interviews, and some really amazing archival footage—crudely shot stuff documenting his exploits in conceptual and performance arts—filmmakers Richard Dewey and Timothy Marrinan cram a lot of incident and ideas into Burden’s life story. The young Burden spoke with an eerie calm that you could see as rather seductive, and he sure needed that quality, many of his contemporaries confirm, in order to pull off some of his schemes. He grew up the son of an engineer who consulted at MIT, and like his dad, he had big ideas as he studied to be an architect—so big he wasn’t willing to wait through an apprenticeship to realize them. He turned to art instead, and took a determinedly conceptual road, living in a padlocked locker for five days as his first piece. “We weren’t sure if he was dangerous or crazy, ” one of his school friends remembers.  Around this time the British art critic Brian Sewell turns up to bemoan the lack of “craft” in such work and insist that it’s not at all. Burden, giving an account of his thinking, discusses the dimensionality of sculpture, the active nature of apprehending it (“you’re supposed to walk around”) and on concluding that “sculpture is action” lays the groundwork for his increasingly outrageous pieces, the most well-known of which have the artist actually getting shot with a rifle (the details of this performance are more terrifying than that description even directly implies) or having himself semi-crucified on the back of a Volkswagen Beetle whose engine is revved to maximum for two minutes while he lies there. (The object, Burden says, was to explode the car. What then? The work also inspired the David Bowie couplet “Tell you who you are/if you nail me to my car. ”) “I keep wanting not to say the word ‘sado-masochistic, ’” the critic Peter Schjeldal says, settling on “sinister” to describe both Burden and his work at the time. Even the less famous pieces, such as one in which he laid behind a pane of glass at the Chicago Art Institute … for several days. One critical skeptic who became a kind of believer in Burden’s artistic legitimacy was our own Roger Ebert, who at first was among those who considered Burden an Evel Knievel of art but admitted that once he saw Burden’s Chicago piece it stuck with him, making him “ponder the nature of time itself. ” The movie goes on to chronicle Burden moving away from performance and starting to build actual things, after a period when sustained drug abuse and strained personal relations were indeed causing him to act in dangerous ways on an extracurricular basis. His early works involving craft were not initially benign. When you hear him say, “I was thinking about flywheels a lot, ” you say, “uh oh. ” Artist Ed Ruscha describes his terror at being in the same room with the contraption. Jonathan Gold, the legendary L. A.  food critic who was once an assistant to Burden, observes of the late work, “The idea that he’d become loved and emblematic of Los Angeles in that cuddly way—no one would have thought of that. ” One thing I found missing from this movie was more explanatory material—the hows and whys of Burden changing his process. Certainly a piece such as “Urban Light” fits into his views about sculpture and activity. I can put that together. But I wanted to hear more anyway. Burden died in 2015, at age 69, of a cancer he had battled for a while. The story of how he unveiled his last piece is a testimony to his passion and commitment. I love this song. I just finished watching this film at the Traverse City Film Festival, I absolutely cannot rave enough about this film! the cinematography, the acting, the dialogue, everything is absolutely spot on! It is so intense that you, as the viewer, can feel the struggle that Mike Burden is going through and it just captures you and sucks you right in. especially if you know anything about the backstory on it and what really happened. To be honest this film emotionally drained me, I am literally exhausted from watching it. I would even have to go as far as to giving it 6 out of 5 stars, this is one of those do not miss movies.

The truest rebels in cinema history are often the ones dealing with the consequences of a harsh film world. From Jean Vigo's poverty to Orson Welles' censored and re-edited works, von Stroheim was certainly one of the more screwed over directors in film history. Erich von Stroheim began causing issues in 1922 with his film Foolish Wives. The original budget was slated at $250, 000, but the final product totaled around $1, 225, 000. The film originally ran for 6-10 hours, but it was completely cut down for theaters. This project was so infamous, it hindered Stroheim's reputation with the studio. Similar issues were happening during development of Stroheim's next film, Merry-Go-Round, so much so that Stroheim was fired (despite being the lead at the time), with Rupert Julian (Phantom of the Opera) replacing him as director, and Norman Kerry (The Unknown) replacing him as star. This would happen again in 1929 with the film Queen Kelly, though much more of Stroheim's contributions were left in that film. This brings us to possibly the most infamous injustice of all, the butchering of Stroheim's magnum opus: Greed. The film originally ran 8 hours long, with only 12 people having seen the original cut. Of the 12, Idwal Jones, Harry Carr, and Rex Ingram (The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse) all said it was the greatest film ever made, and that it would be difficult for any film to top it. (Welford Beaton actually disliked the 8-hour version) The 8 hour version was supposedly to be a rough cut, and after cutting the film down to 4 1/2 hours, Stroheim said he refused to edit further. The studio forced him to continue editing, thus he had friends edit for him, including Rex Ingram and Grant Whytock. They further cut the film down to about 3 1/2 hours. The film was still too long. LIST OF PEOPLE TO BLAME FOR THE BUTCHERING OF GREED Louis B. Mayer was the man who originally wanted it edited down. Got into a fight with von Stroheim. June Mathis was originally assigned to edit the film down. She passed the job down towards... Joseph W. Farnham, who actually edited the film down to its desired length for theaters. The film's final length was about 2 hours, a quarter of the original project. As well, Farnham was known for using titlecards to stitch together the context of butchered scenes, and the titlecards are still made fun of to this day. Lines such as "Such was McTeague" and "Let's go over and sit on the sewer" were used to connect scenes awkwardly and forcefully by Farnham. The eight hour version of Greed is one of the most sought after lost film versions in history. As to not make this thread filled with anger directed at those long dead, I feel I should lighten the mood a bit. Greed, even in its current state, is incredibly butchered. But it's nevertheless regarded as one of the finest silent films ever made. The use of color, outstandingly exaggerated acting performances that never come off as silly or over-acted, and a story that, even with many of its scenes removed, moves along at a patient and rewarding pace. The film still enthralls film buffs and critics to this day, and further restorations have brought the film closer to its original state. The current version stands anywhere from 2 1/2 to 4 hours, depending on whether or not you want a partial slideshow of lost scenes where only stills exist. Sure, we complain about how butchered Stroheim's films may have been, but the fact we can see through the scissor-cuts of his film to see what could have been, and what we already have, shows that while Stroheim was never a studio favorite, and while very few of his films are what he wanted to show as a final product, we should be thankful for what we have. And Greed is a fantastic film to feel thankful for.

Surely I could do it now. I focused. The color was like two cats sharing cream, girls braiding their hair together. Like taking turns on swing sets and sleeping with a friend in the most innocent sense of the phrase. Shared secrets, shared joys. The girl clutched her notebook. We stared. Then, tentatively, she turned the book to face me. Sprawled across the two open pages, she wrote: Can you see them too?

Avarice (2012), by Jesus Solana Greed ( OE grǽdum) is an inordinate or insatiatiable longing, esp. for wealth, status, and power. As secular psychological concept, greed is, similarly, an inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs. The degree of inordinance is related to the inability to control the reformulation of "wants" once desired "needs" are eliminated. Erich Fromm described greed as "a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction.
