Yep and I find it amazing how the baby boomers reckless spending over the past 30 years is the direct cause of why the entire economy is in the shape its in right now. So is greed really that good? Yea at the time it was. but at who's expense? Well. The entitled generation right now is paying for all of their mistakes and greed. So that pretty much sums up this entire movie.

The truest rebels in cinema history are often the ones dealing with the consequences of a harsh film world. From Jean Vigo's poverty to Orson Welles' censored and re-edited works, von Stroheim was certainly one of the more screwed over directors in film history. Erich von Stroheim began causing issues in 1922 with his film Foolish Wives. The original budget was slated at $250, 000, but the final product totaled around $1, 225, 000. The film originally ran for 6-10 hours, but it was completely cut down for theaters. This project was so infamous, it hindered Stroheim's reputation with the studio. Similar issues were happening during development of Stroheim's next film, Merry-Go-Round, so much so that Stroheim was fired (despite being the lead at the time), with Rupert Julian (Phantom of the Opera) replacing him as director, and Norman Kerry (The Unknown) replacing him as star. This would happen again in 1929 with the film Queen Kelly, though much more of Stroheim's contributions were left in that film. This brings us to possibly the most infamous injustice of all, the butchering of Stroheim's magnum opus: Greed. The film originally ran 8 hours long, with only 12 people having seen the original cut. Of the 12, Idwal Jones, Harry Carr, and Rex Ingram (The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse) all said it was the greatest film ever made, and that it would be difficult for any film to top it. (Welford Beaton actually disliked the 8-hour version) The 8 hour version was supposedly to be a rough cut, and after cutting the film down to 4 1/2 hours, Stroheim said he refused to edit further. The studio forced him to continue editing, thus he had friends edit for him, including Rex Ingram and Grant Whytock. They further cut the film down to about 3 1/2 hours. The film was still too long. LIST OF PEOPLE TO BLAME FOR THE BUTCHERING OF GREED Louis B. Mayer was the man who originally wanted it edited down. Got into a fight with von Stroheim. June Mathis was originally assigned to edit the film down. She passed the job down towards... Joseph W. Farnham, who actually edited the film down to its desired length for theaters. The film's final length was about 2 hours, a quarter of the original project. As well, Farnham was known for using titlecards to stitch together the context of butchered scenes, and the titlecards are still made fun of to this day. Lines such as "Such was McTeague" and "Let's go over and sit on the sewer" were used to connect scenes awkwardly and forcefully by Farnham. The eight hour version of Greed is one of the most sought after lost film versions in history. As to not make this thread filled with anger directed at those long dead, I feel I should lighten the mood a bit. Greed, even in its current state, is incredibly butchered. But it's nevertheless regarded as one of the finest silent films ever made. The use of color, outstandingly exaggerated acting performances that never come off as silly or over-acted, and a story that, even with many of its scenes removed, moves along at a patient and rewarding pace. The film still enthralls film buffs and critics to this day, and further restorations have brought the film closer to its original state. The current version stands anywhere from 2 1/2 to 4 hours, depending on whether or not you want a partial slideshow of lost scenes where only stills exist. Sure, we complain about how butchered Stroheim's films may have been, but the fact we can see through the scissor-cuts of his film to see what could have been, and what we already have, shows that while Stroheim was never a studio favorite, and while very few of his films are what he wanted to show as a final product, we should be thankful for what we have. And Greed is a fantastic film to feel thankful for.
Jokes on them, that fat slum lord went on to become president of the united states. Quotes tagged as "greed" Showing 1-30 of 1, 097 “Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed. ” ― “The world says: "You have needs -- satisfy them. You have as much right as the rich and the mighty. Don't hesitate to satisfy your needs; indeed, expand your needs and demand more. " This is the worldly doctrine of today. And they believe that this is freedom. The result for the rich is isolation and suicide, for the poor, envy and murder. ” Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Brothers Karamazov “He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have. ” Socrates “Successful people are always looking for opportunities to help others. Unsuccessful people are always asking, "What's in it for me? ” Brian Tracy “There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. ” J. R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again “Manifest plainness, Embrace simplicity, Reduce selfishness, Have few desires. ” Lao Tzu “That same night, I wrote my first short story. It took me thirty minutes. It was a dark little tale about a man who found a magic cup and learned that if he wept into the cup, his tears turned into pearls. But even though he had always been poor, he was a happy man and rarely shed a tear. So he found ways to make himself sad so that his tears could make him rich. As the pearls piled up, so did his greed grow. The story ended with the man sitting on a mountain of pearls, knife in hand, weeping helplessly into the cup with his beloved wife's slain body in his arms. ” Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner “Greed is your god, Kaz. " He almost laughed at that. "No, Inej. Greed bows to me. It is my servant and my lever. ” Leigh Bardugo, Six of Crows “Declare your jihad on thirteen enemies you cannot see -egoism, arrogance, conceit, selfishness, greed, lust, intolerance, anger, lying, cheating, gossiping and slandering. If you can master and destroy them, then you will be read to fight the enemy you can see. ” Al-Ghazzali “No More Games. No More Bombs. No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming. 67. That is 17 years past 50. 17 more than I needed or wanted. Boring. I am always bitchy. No Fun — for anybody. You are getting Greedy. Act your old age. Relax — This won't hurt” Hunter S. Thompson “There is nobody in this country who got rich on their own. Nobody. You built a factory out there - good for you. But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn't have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory... Now look. You built a factory and it turned into something terrific or a great idea - God bless! Keep a hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along. ” Elizabeth Warren “If it weren't for greed, intolerance, hate, passion and murder, you would have no works of art, no great buildings, no medical science, no Mozart, no Van Gough, no Muppets and no Louis Armstrong. ” Jasper Fforde, The Big Over Easy “I find it odd- the greed of mankind. People only like you for as long as they perceive they can get what they want from you. Or for as long as they perceive you are who they want you to be. But I like people for all of their changing surprises, the thoughts in their heads, the warmth that changes to cold and the cold that changes to warmth... for being human. The rawness of being human delights me. ” C. JoyBell C. “There is no fire like passion, there is no shark like hatred, there is no snare like folly, there is no torrent like greed. ” Siddharta Gautama “I am afraid that our eyes are bigger than our stomachs, and that we have more curiosity than understanding. We grasp at everything, but catch nothing except wind. ” Michel de Montaigne, The Complete Essays “They had battled and bloodied one another, they had kept secrets, broken hearts, lied, betrayed, exiled, they had walked away, said goodbye and sworn it was forever, and somehow, every time, they had mended, they had forgiven, they had survived. Some mistakes could never be fixed - some, but not all. Some people can't be driven away, no matter how hard you try. Some friendships won't break. ” Robin Wasserman, Greed “Be Fearful When Others Are Greedy and Greedy When Others Are Fearful” Warren Buffett “So the unwanting soul sees what's hidden, and the ever-wanting soul sees only what it wants. ” “Why can a Grisha possess but one amplifier? I will answer this question instead: What is infinite? The universe and the greed of men. ” Shadow and Bone “Thus did a handful of rapacious citizens come to control all that was worth controlling in America. Thus was the savage and stupid and entirely inappropriate and unnecessary and humorless American class system created. Honest, industrious, peaceful citizens were classed as bloodsuckers, if they asked to be paid a living wage. And they saw that praise was reserved henceforth for those who devised means of getting paid enormously for committing crimes against which no laws had been passed. Thus the American dream turned belly up, turned green, bobbed to the scummy surface of cupidity unlimited, filled with gas, went bang in the noonday sun. ” Kurt Vonnegut, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater “Well first of all, tell me: Is there some society you know that doesn’t run on greed? You think Russia doesn’t run on greed? You think China doesn’t run on greed? What is greed? Of course, none of us are greedy, it’s only the other fellow who’s greedy. The world runs on individuals pursuing their separate interests. The great achievements of civilization have not come from government bureaus. Einstein didn’t construct his theory under order from a bureaucrat. Henry Ford didn’t revolutionize the automobile industry that way. In the only cases in which the masses have escaped from the kind of grinding poverty you’re talking about, the only cases in recorded history, are where they have had capitalism and largely free trade. If you want to know where the masses are worse off, worst off, it’s exactly in the kinds of societies that depart from that. So that the record of history is absolutely crystal clear, that there is no alternative way so far discovered of improving the lot of the ordinary people that can hold a candle to the productive activities that are unleashed by the free-enterprise system. ” Milton Friedman “Greed, envy, sloth, pride and gluttony: these are not vices anymore. No, these are marketing tools. Lust is our way of life. Envy is just a nudge towards another sale. Even in our relationships we consume each other, each of us looking for what we can get out of the other. Our appetites are often satisfied at the expense of those around us. In a dog-eat-dog world we lose part of our humanity. ” Jon Foreman “Our labour preserves us from three great evils -- weariness, vice, and want. ” Voltaire, Candide “When morality comes up against profit, it is seldom that profit loses. ” Shirley Chisholm “That something so small could be so beautiful. Worth so much. Only the strongest people can turn away from feelings like that. ” Anthony Doerr, All the Light We Cannot See “You ever get the feeling the world's filling up with bastards? I do. What I want to know is what happens when all the bastards run out of people to crap on? What happens when all that's left in the world is bastards?... The golden rule. Screw unto others before they screw unto you. ” William Hoffman, A Place For My Head “Ayn Rand's 'philosophy' is nearly perfect in its immorality, which makes the size of her audience all the more ominous and symptomatic as we enter a curious new phase in our society.... To justify and extol human greed and egotism is to my mind not only immoral, but evil. ” Gore Vidal “She never forgets a slight, real or imagined. She takes caution for cowardice and dissent for defiance. And she is greedy. Greedy for power, for honour, for love. ” George R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons.

I absolutely adore Jade and Josh because they are my favorite dancers! 💝. The girl in this cafe keeps staring at me. I know this because I cannot stop staring at her. She takes her coffee from a man radiating violet. This particular shade was for feelings of pride. The barista must have felt that he pulled an especially good shot. Her tentative smile after her first sip confirmed my theory. I looked back to the barista. He noticed her expression and the violet intensified. People have never mystified me. From the way dark blues feel sorrowful, the fuzzy pinks of romance, the passions of reds and the serenity of pastels, I cannot see color without feeling. I see the aura, assess the environment. After a lifetime of practice, you don't have a lot of trouble piecing a person's story together. When I was a child they chalked it up to some sort of hypersensitive synesthesia. As an adult, I can tell it's something more. People are open books. In this case, coloring books. My own little in-joke for my audience of one. You don't make many friends when you make people uncomfortable. When you see too much. But this girl. This color. I'm at a loss. I reveled in the moment, briefly, savoring that unexpected feeling that there was a person in this world that could still surprise me. A mystery. She shined, unmistakably, in that familiar way all people in the emotional whirlwind shine for me and me alone. She scribbled something down in her notebook and then looked back up at me. She held my gaze. I broke it. If the mystery of the new emotional aura wasn't reason enough for rapture, the color itself was. I had never seen that color before. I always wondered about the color spectrum, the wavelengths human eyes can't perceive. Is that what I'm experiencing now? Did this ability extend beyond seeing auras? I searched this new color for its feeling. It must have a core. I thought back to my childhood, the sloppy associations I made to learn to read them. The color feeling sensation. Surely I could do it now. I focused. The color was like two cats sharing cream, girls braiding their hair together. Like taking turns on swing sets and sleeping with a friend in the most innocent sense of the phrase. Shared secrets, shared joys. The girl clutched her notebook. We stared. Then, tentatively, she turned the book to face me. Sprawled across the two open pages, she wrote: Can you see them too?

Avarice (2012), by Jesus Solana Greed ( OE grǽdum) is an inordinate or insatiatiable longing, esp. for wealth, status, and power. As secular psychological concept, greed is, similarly, an inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs. The degree of inordinance is related to the inability to control the reformulation of "wants" once desired "needs" are eliminated. Erich Fromm described greed as "a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction. " It is typically used to criticize those who seek excessive material wealth, although it may apply to the need to feel more excessively moral, social, or otherwise better than someone else. The purpose for greed, and any actions associated with it, is possibly to deprive others of potential means (perhaps, of basic survival and comfort) or future opportunities accordingly, or to obstruct them therefrom, as a measure of enhanced discretion via majority belongings -having and majority competitive advantage, thus insidious and tyrannical or otherwise having negative connotation. Alternately, the purpose could be defense or counteraction from such dangerous, potential leverage in matters of questionable agreeability. A consequence of greedy activity may be inability to sustain any of the costs or burdens associated with that which has been or is being accumulated, leading to a backfire or destruction, whether of self or more generally. So, the level of "inordinance" of greed pertains to the amount of vanity, malice or burden associated with it. Literature Thomas Aquinas says that greed "is a sin against God, just as all mortal sins, in as much as man condemns things eternal for the sake of temporal things. " [1]:A1 In Dante's Purgatory, the avaricious penitents were bound and laid face down on the ground for having concentrated too much on earthly thoughts. From Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary, greed means "greedy for base gains. " Gain itself is not a sin, but the gain of base things. Also, "given to greed" means literally, "given to filth. " Thus, a moral concern, not a subjective economic one for which there is no equal. A very wealthy man, for example, may be considered "greedy" in error, if such wealth was planned for some great achievement or building project. Ivan Boesky famously defended greed in a 18 May 1986 commencement address at the UC Berkeley 's School of Business Administration, in which he said, "Greed is all right, by the way. I want you to know that. I think greed is healthy. You can be greedy and still feel good about yourself". [2] This speech inspired the 1987 film Wall Street, which features the famous line spoken by Gordon Gekko: "Greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. " [3] Meher Baba dictated that "Greed is a state of restlessness of the heart, and it consists mainly of craving for power and possessions. Possessions and power are sought for the fulfillment of desires. Man is only partially satisfied in his attempt to have the fulfillment of his desires, and this partial satisfaction fans and increases the flame of craving instead of extinguishing it. Thus greed always finds an endless field of conquest and leaves the man endlessly dissatisfied. The chief expressions of greed are related to the emotional part of man. " [4] Inspirations Scavenging and hoarding of materials or objects, theft and robbery, especially by means of violence, trickery, or manipulation of authority are all actions that may be inspired by greed. Such misdeeds can include simony, where one profits from soliciting goods within the actual confines of a church. A well-known example of greed is the pirate Hendrick Lucifer, who fought for hours to acquire Cuban gold, becoming mortally wounded in the process. He died of his wounds hours after having transferred the booty to his ship.
